An Antique Collector’s Adventure

In November I attended the Delaware Antique Show, often referred to as the best show of American antiques. I had never attended a “high-end” show. Here is what I found.

Arriving a bit early I could have been first in line 20 minutes before the show opened on its first day (not counting the soiree the previous evening). After queueing up for hours in Manchester I was surprised. When the show opened, I would estimate there were 60 people in line.

Parking was free. You heard that correctly, free parking. Wow!

The show was marked by a leisurely pace. When it opened no one stepped off at rocket speed. Everyone sauntered into the show and the booths that awaited us. Aisles were side, very wide. The crowd was “sparse,” at least that is how I would describe it. I did not see red dots (sold) sprouting nor did I see dealers writing up invoices one after another. But dealers said they had done some business the previous evening.

Prices were what you would expect. I would describe the show as the one to attend if you want provenance and more formal wares, American and English. There were one or two dealers with high country pieces filling their booths. I did see a redware bank for 5 figures. I passed on it.

Given what my wife and I collect if our home were empty, I would have purchased the set of six Windsor armchairs in Liverant’s booth, black over the original green. Provenance went back to the original owner. Go find another set of those! They had not sold in the three hours I attended the show; they should have. I hope they have found a new home; they were wonderful. And comfortable also, Arthur (Liverant) suggested I try one.

David Schorsch’s booth was sparse. He sold almost all the Shaker goods he had the evening before.

Attendees kept trickling in during the morning and early afternoon. Dealers had time to give folks in their booths their full attention. I got to talk with several dealers I had not met in person before. Great fun.

Would I return? If I lived in the area I certainly would. But with the Internet, the few genres I am looking to upgrade and a full house I think the shows in Manchester in August are a better fit for my tastes.

I am happy I went.
