The Collector Itch

I’ve got “the itch,” “the urge,” the “I want to find something.” I’ve got a dollar in my antique account and a list of objects to seek when I head to Manchester in a few days. I recently found a painting my wife and I both liked and purchased it. But it remains with the framer and will not be shipped soon enough to cure my itch.

An interesting phenomenon¾the need or want to add to a collection. I know enough to avoid buying for buying’s sake. That is how mistakes are made. But I’d really like to fall in love with a great piece of Americana and bring it home.

I cannot be the only collector who feels “the itch.” In talking with others, they remain hopeful, knowing that one cannot orchestrate falling in love as easily as getting out of bed in the morning. I have reached out to a couple of dealers for one piece I’d especially like to find. They will look. And I will wait.

I will let you know how Manchester goes. In the past I have walked the shows and found nothing. And sometimes I’ve been stopped in my tracks by a great antique. I hope the antique god (goddess) smiles on me.
