Kudos to Clayton Pennington, editor of Maine Antique Digest for his editorial (p. 36) in the April 2024 issue. It was titled, Buy the Dip. And as Editor Pennington wrote, “Rather than bemoan the sometimes lackluster and cyclical economics of the current antique market, we’d rather accentuate the positive. It is a great time to buy.
What I liked is that the editorial was “pro collector.” It could have bemoaned dealers having to work harder to bring in income. The same for auction houses. But instead, as the editorial says, “Objects that were once out of reach are suddenly affordable, allowing buyers to step up the quality of antiques they are acquiring.” It was good to read an editorial that highlighted collectors improving their collections.
The editorial gives a good basis for collector courage. If there is a piece a collector has been or is coveting, now is the time to buy. The editorial made collectors visible and important. Bravo!
