Long ago (in a place far away) I purchased some nice pieces from a dealer I was later to learn “enhanced” some of his wares. Had I known… Anyway, I was talking to a dealer I know about a fabulous and interesting tallcase clock he had for sale. One topic led to another, and I learned that the first dealers from whom my wife and I purchased, and who taught us a great deal of what we know today (Bernice and Jim Miller, now both deceased), would stop at this dealer’s shop, and bring back New England pieces to Wisconsin. Of course, Bernice never divulged her sources so her clients would not go directly to the mother lode.
Further on in the discussion the dealer mentioned he always smiled when he sees the cover of my first book, Come Collect With Me, as the desk pictured on the cover was purchased from his inventory by the dealer mentioned above who sold it to me. The latter dealer has a sterling reputation and I concluded, all these years later, and some worries as well, that the desk was as represented.
The American antique world is a small one indeed.
